Most chronic illnesses, like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), are long-lasting conditions that can be controlled, but unfortunately not cured. The most common symptoms are difficulty breathing, a chronic cough, and feeling tired. Flare-ups can happen quickly and last several days, requiring additional management with medication. Although not curable, COPD and other similar illnesses can be managed with the right treatments.

Years of living with COPD takes a toll on the patient and their caregiver. The impact on daily life for all members of the family can lead to physical and emotional stress, especially as the years dealing with a chronic condition go on.

It’s important to have a support system in place that can help combat social isolation, navigate a complex health system, and assist family members with daily activities. Springpoint at Home is uniquely positioned to help in all these areas. Our Aging Life Care Advisors™/Care Managers will navigate you through the health care system and combat isolating situations for both the patient and fellow family members. Our Certified Home Health Aides are able to assist with personal care and daily activities and provide respite for family members while they are onsite.

COPD (like the early stages of most chronic illnesses) is invisible, which can make it difficult for others to understand the toll the disease takes on the family. Because symptoms like chronic pain, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression cannot be seen, other family members may not understand why help is needed, and work environments may not allow the extra time needed by caregivers in certain circumstances.

When COPD is diagnosed early with mild symptoms and is well managed and controlled, people can live for 10 to 20 years after the diagnosis. It is important to manage daily symptoms, which takes diligence and a strong care plan and support team. Without these, acute health problems and complications can shorten life expectancy.

Springpoint at Home can be an important and integral part of a care plan for the patient and caregivers, along with being a key component of the family support team.
