What are some things that can help relieve stress as a caregiver? Is it having backup for doctor appointments? Is it pre-made meal so you don’t have to think about cooking on those tougher days? Is it someone who can help your older adult get dressed or act as a companion to them while you get a couple hours of respite?

These are just some of the ways that a caregiver’s day can be made easier. Springpoint at Home’s Certified Home Health Aides (CCHAs) and Aging Life Care Advisors™ are ready, able, and willing to help.

But let’s not forget about emotional support. Truly, the tasks of caregiving are sometimes not the hardest part. It is the emotions around those tasks in your life as a caregiver that are more impactful. So, as we celebrate National Hug Day during the month of March, don’t forget the caregiver in your life needs your ongoing emotional support. What is an easy way to show that support?

We know that it is common for caregivers to be so overwhelmed that connections are lost at a time when forging and keeping connections is critically important to self-care. One way to keep connections is through touch and a heart-to-heart hug. When you hug, place your face to the right of the other person’s and hug for two deep breaths. This simple exercise has proven to build connections and deepen relationships.

We also know that babies fail to thrive when they are not held, nuzzled, or hugged enough. The same is true of caregivers! If they don’t build, keep, and deepen relationships during the caregiving journey, they can fail to thrive as well. So let’s remember that during March (and all through the year), it’s important to give a caregiver a heart-to-heart hug every once in awhile. It will make their day… and yours!
